SMK GTJ Escape Open Face Gloss Helmet
The SMK GTJ Escape is a gloss open face helmet with a long anti scratch visor, an internal retractable sun visor and two shell sizes for a better fit. It is made for city riding and relaxed tours.
Available in sizes S to XXL, with a one year manufacturer warranty.
Bright mornings, low evening sun and the odd tunnel in between. That is a normal commute, and it is the kind of ride the SMK GTJ Escape was designed around. It is an open face helmet with a sporty shape, a glossy finish and a sun visor that drops down when you need it and tucks away when you do not.
The GTJ Escape belongs to SMK's GTJ series, made for tourers and urban riders. You can see the rest of the line in our SMK GTJ helmets, or look at the Retro Jet series on our SMK open face helmets page if you want a vintage look.
Why riders choose the GTJ Escape
- Internal retractable sun visor, operated with an easy gesture, so you can ride in changing light without sunglasses
- Long, wide anti scratch visor for a clear view and protection from wind and dust
- Quick release visor, so you can take it off or change it in seconds
- EIRT shell, an energy impact resistant thermoplastic, in two shell sizes so the helmet is not bulky on smaller heads
- Removable, washable, breathable and hypoallergenic liner with moisture managing antistatic fabric
- Speaker pockets for a Bluetooth headset and a padded, quick release chin strap
- Eye glass easyfit design, so spectacles slide in without a fight
- Channeled air intakes, top air vents and a hot air exhaust to keep air moving
- Sporty, rounded shape with a gloss finish that looks good on commuters, scooters and street bikes
The dual visor system
The outer visor is long and wide, which gives a broad field of view. It has an anti scratch coating, so it holds up to daily use. Behind it sits a smaller internal sun visor. You slide it down in bright light and push it back up in shade, all with one hand and without stopping.
The outer visor is quick release, so removing it takes seconds. If you ever scratch it or want a different tint, SMK sells replacement visors for the GTJ in clear, smoke and mirrored finishes.
Fit and shell sizes
This helmet comes with two shell sizes. S and M use the M shell, and L, XL and XXL use the L shell. The point is simple: a small head gets a smaller shell, so the helmet sits closer and does not feel top heavy.
Measure your head one inch above the eyebrows and match the number to the chart above. If you are between sizes, our helmet fitting guide explains how to test the fit and when to size down.
Comfort inside
The liner is breathable and hypoallergenic, made from moisture managing antistatic fabric, and it comes out for washing. The helmet has speaker pockets, so a Bluetooth headset sits in place instead of pressing on your ears. Air enters through channeled intakes, leaves through the hot air exhaust and the top vents, and the eye glass easyfit design leaves room for spectacle arms.
Weight
Helmets on the M shell weigh about 1,450 g and helmets on the L shell about 1,550 g, give or take 50 g. That is light enough for daily riding without neck fatigue.
Safety and certification
The helmet is certified to ISI, DOT and ECE 22.06. ISI is what Indian law asks for on a two wheeler helmet, DOT is the US standard and ECE 22.06 is the newest European one. Check the label inside the helmet when it arrives. Like every open face helmet, it leaves your jaw uncovered, so it is best for city streets and relaxed rides rather than long, fast highway runs.
Care
Wipe the shell with a soft damp cloth and mild soap, and clean the visor with a microfibre cloth rather than a rough sponge. Our helmet maintenance guide has the full routine.
Warranty
The helmet comes with a one year manufacturer warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Q1: Is the SMK GTJ Escape a half face helmet?
A1: Many riders call it that, but it is an open face helmet. It covers your ears and the back of your head, and has no chin bar. A true half helmet covers only the top of the head.
Q2: How does the internal sun visor work?
A2: It is built into the helmet behind the main visor. You slide it down with an easy gesture when the light is bright and slide it back up when it is not.
Q3: What do the two shell sizes mean for my size?
A3: S and M are built on the M shell, and L, XL and XXL on the L shell. You just pick the helmet size that matches your head. The right shell comes with it.
Q4: Can I use a Bluetooth headset with it?
A4: The helmet has speaker pockets, which are made to hold the speakers of a communication headset. Fitting depends on the headset you buy.
Q5: Can I change the visor?
A5: Yes. SMK offers replacement visors for the GTJ, so a scratched visor does not mean a new helmet.
Q6: Is the GTJ Escape good for highway riding?
A6: It is built for city and relaxed riding. Wind, grit and insects can reach your face at speed, so for frequent highway runs a full face helmet is the safer pick.
