We Indians are always looking for getting more bang for the buck in everything. This is why Maruti-Suzuki’s “Kitna Deti Hai” ad campaign resonated so well with public. And seeking value for money products in riding gear isn’t a new trend.

However, earlier we used to get sub-standard / knock-offs at lower prices and riding jackets used to start from Rs.5-6000/-. This put them out of reach of many riders who wanted to purchase riding jacket for the first time (mental barrier to spend so much money for JUST a jacket) or for riders who wanted something simple (that still offered good protection) for daily commute.

In most of the cases, companies decided (correctly in our opinion) to not offer the removable thermal and rain liners. This enables them to offer riding jackets that has decently good level of protection at quite low prices. So we decided to identify riding jackets that offer good level of protection and still won’t cost you a bomb.

Note: we have considered only brands that are known across India. These jackets are shown from cheapest to costliest)

Positives:

  1. This is a textile+mesh riding jacket. Indian weather is typically hot (unless you stay in northern states) and mesh is one factor that every rider wants in his riding jacket. Scimitar Cosmo has mesh on most of chest and back area. Only the minimum required area is covered by textile. This would provide ample ventilation.
  2. Adjusting straps at elbows, torso and waist enable you to get optimum fit.
  3. 3M Scotchlite™ reflective elements make you more visible to others during night rides.
  4. It gets 6 month warranty so very less chance of getting ripped off.
  5. Scimitar Cosmo jacket looks good and is available in S to XXL sizes and in 3 colours.
  6. Free shipping across India.

Negatives:

  1. Scimitar Cosmo jacket offers CE Level 1 armour.
  2. It does NOT have either the thermal or rain liner.
  3. No waterproof pocket. So you need to carry plastic bag if you want to protect your mobile, wallet or other valuable items.

Verdict:

While Scimitar has skimped on cost of thermal and rain liners, you can easily correct that by using normal thermals / rain coat.

You can also upgrade the armour provided. Check up the prices of CE Level 2 armour here. But if you are thinking of buying thermals, raincoat and upgrade the armour, then this is not correct jacket for you. The cost of purchasing all these items will negate the attractive price of Scimitar Cosmo jacket.

Get this riding jacket if you are looking for a jacket that you can use every day for commuting and also for short rides.

2. Aspida Atlas Riding Jacket

Aspida Atlas Riding Jacket

Aspida Atlas Riding Jacket was initially priced at ₹ 5,000 and is now available at discounted price of ₹ 3,750/-. This jacket has mainly Maxtex® 600D fabric on front and back. Mesh is provided on both sides. So this will provide less ventilation than Scimitar Cosmo jacket.

  2. It does NOT have either the thermal or rain liner.

Verdict:

  4. No thermal liner.

Verdict:

While Biking Brotherhood has a really good reputation about quality of its riding gear, absence of features like no colour options, no adjusters at waist / arms (when competition is offering them) makes this less attractive option than others.
